Design Protégée: Alexander Wang

WWD profiled an in depth look at one of our favorite designers, Alexander Wang, The photo spread was taken at his Tribeca office which is four times the size of his previous 2,000-square-foot flatiron studio, which isn’t bad considering he use to work out of his small shoebox apartment 4 years ago.

Here are the highlights from the article:

Wang has often used Kate Moss as a muse for his collections, as a very large photograph of her with pink hair hangs on his office wall. He has created a celebrity and industry following with his successful niche of cotton basics mixed with high fashion silk slip dresses.

Within the last year 24 year old Wang has been nominated for Fashion Foundation award, a CFDA Swarovski Award for Womenswear and, most recently, is a top 10 finalist for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund….like he needs the money, after seeing his office.

With much success this year, Wang’s spring sales jumped 40 percent from 2007 to 2008 and fall sales, 60 percent. So far, wholesale numbers this year have totaled $8 million, with 2009 projections running in the $10 million to $15 million range. Wang has even been offered to have his shop-in-shop at Barney’s!!!!

For Wang’s Spring 09 collection? “half swim caps, half corseted do-rags”……I guess we just have to go to his show on September 6th to find just what corseted do-rags are.
